Eyesalve: Faith As A Mustard Seed
“And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.” Mt. 17:20
In the three synoptic gospels Jesus talks of the mustard seed. Three times He uses it as a comparison to the kingdom of God. Two times He uses it as an analogy of faith. As a young Christian I picked up a phrase that I heard and used many times that says all we need is faith the size of a mustard seed and we can move mountains. That little saying left many of us in confusion. It condemned us for not even having faith as little as a mustard seed. But just recently I discovered that nowhere in the bible does it say the size of a mustard seed; what it says is “as a grain of mustard seed,.” That changes the whole meaning of the scripture. Jesus compared the kingdom of God to a grain of mustard seed that starts small but grows big, so we can use that same analogy for faith. Our faith starts as a grain but from then it must grow. As that faith grows, mountains can then be removed and trees can be thrown into the sea.
